Harris to Support Army's Training Ranges

Harris Corp. has been awarded a 30-month contract by Lockheed Martin Corp. to support the development of a common instrumentation and communications architecture for the Army's training ranges, the company announced May 7.

The architecture will make possible more realistic training for soldiers and decrease training costs. Options should place the value of the contract at about $3 million, Harris reported.


Under terms of the contract with Lockheed Martin's Information Systems unit in Orlando, Fla., Harris will provide a common communications architecture for the ranges.

Lockheed Martin won the Common Training Instrumentation Architecture task order under the Live Training Domain portion of the Army's Army Simulation, Training and Instrumentation Command omnibus contract, also called Stricom.



Bob Henry, president of Harris' Government Communications Systems Division, called the task order a significant win for Harris, saying it provides an entry into Stricom, and will allow the company to establish and maintain long-term relationships with prime contractors such as Lockheed Martin.


According to Harris Corp., the task order program will evolve into an open-architecture, component-based product line that will employ widely used industry protocols for communications and data transmission, resulting in affordable interoperability, supportability and reliability. It also will make possible the addition of new technology as it becomes available.


Harris, based in of Melbourne, Fla., provides products and services in these communications markets: wireless, broadcast, government and network support. Its government division conducts research studies, develops prototypes and produces air, space and land communications and information processing systems for military and government agencies, their prime contractors, the company's commercial businesses and select commercial organizations worldwide.
