The Justice Department plans to release a request for proposals by Nov. 1 for the development of an automated victim notification system.

The system, which will be used by the FBI, the U.S. Attorneys Offices and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, will track suspects and criminals as they make their way through the justice system. When they reach significant milestones, the system will notify their victims.

The system is being proposed in response to several laws mandating victim notification. Justice divisions try to comply with the laws by using existing case management systems, but the current systems are not compatible with one another.

The proposed contract will be for seven years including options.
