Booz Allen Hamilton has hired William Vass as its new chief technology officer and he will join the company on Monday.

Vass joins Booz Allen from Amazon Web Services, where he was a vice president of engineering. Prior to AWS, he held multiple senior leadership positions at start-ups and Fortune 100 companies.

He is succeeding Susan Penfield, who is retiring in July after 30 years with Booz Allen.

As CTO, Vass will focus on the company’s artificial intelligence, cyber, software and data-centric capabilities. Booz Allen’s Velocity, Leadership and Technology strategy known as VoLT centers around those tech areas.

Vass has more than 40-years of experience working on innovations such as large-scale cloud, digital twins, 3D-processing extended reality, geospatial and high performance computing.

At AWS, he spent a decade leading software and hardware development for emerging technology services.

Prior to his work in the private sector, Vass also worked inside government and was part of the senior executive service.
