Lockheed to lay off 500 in IS&GS group

In the wake of announcing it will sell off its IT business, Lockheed Martin is planning to reduce its Information Systems & Global Solutions workforce by 500 positions.

The company said that these layoffs are not part of its review of its government IT and technical services businesses, but are rather a part of a larger effort to optimize IS&GS resources and align them to customer needs.

“Continuing to reduce our overhead costs, is expected to enable us to be a much leaner and more agile organization which is what is needed to compete effectively,” said IS&GS executive vice president Sondra Barbour, who said in a release that the decision was not easily made.

The company is planning on keeping mission IT and services, energy solutions and space services businesses that are part of the IS&GS group, but the IS&GS group will be no more after the divestiture.
