Orkand Wins $72 Million State Department Contract

The Orkand Corp. was awarded a five-year, $72 million contract by the State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs to support and maintain installed systems, operate a centralized integration and repair facility and create and maintain documentation for the installed systems.

The company also will install upgraded systems and train bureau and department employees.

The main focus of the contract is ongoing support and care of installed bureau systems, as well as management and operation of the centralized integration and repair facility.

Orkand of Falls Church, Va., was awarded the work as a recompete of a contract it had won in 1995.

To date, Orkand has performed systems engineering, software development, technical support and systems deployment and training work worth more than $71 million.

Orkand's teammates include Stanley Associates Inc. of Alexandria, Va., an information technology solutions provider specializing in installation and training; New Year Tech Inc. of Vienna, Va., specializing in automated inventory management; and the University of Maryland University College, delivering distance learning functionality in support of training initiatives.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs maintains a presence at some 260 consulates and embassies abroad in countries with which the United States has diplomatic relations.

The bureau provides a wide range of services throughout the United States and overseas, including issuing passports and visas.
