AUG. 11 ? The Defense Logistics Agency selected Andersen Consulting to be its systems integrator on the $389.8 million Business Systems Modernization program.

The program is a key initiative for DLA to re-engineer its logistics processes by using best commercial practices. Andersen will head a five-year effort that will include implementation of SAP enterprise resource planning software and an advanced planning and scheduling system from Manugistics of Rockville, Md., to replace material management legacy systems.

"This is a significant milestone for our agency in its plan to achieve the logistics transformation envisioned by Joint Vision 2020, the joint warfighting vision for the military services," said Rear Adm. Ray Archer, DLA vice director. "This effort will provide us with the necessary leading edge technology to allow us to focus on our core business: supply chain management."

Through the modernization project, DLA will be able to provide better service to the warfighters as well as better tools and access to more information for DLA personnel, he said. "The result will be a win-win situation, both for our customers ? America's warfighters ? and the DLA work force," Archer said.

The project will replace two legacy systems, the Standard Automated Material Management System and the Defense Integrated Subsistence Management System.
