By Jennifer Freer, Staff Writer

APRIL 27 ? The General Services Administration has awarded contracts to five companies to provide local telecommunications services to federal government agencies in four more cities under its Metropolitan Area Acquisition Program. The deals total more than $1 billion.

On April 27, GSA selected WinStar Communications Inc., SBC Global Services and AT&T Corp. to provide services to government agencies in Indianapolis. WinStar and Southwestern Bell Telephone Co., were selected to provide services in St. Louis.

The business for the two cities is estimated at $380 million over eight years ? four base years plus four one-year options. The Indianapolis deal has an estimated value of $240 million, and St. Louis about $140 million.

On April 26, WinStar and BellSouth Corp. won MAA deals for both Atlanta and Miami. The contracts in Atlanta are estimated at $520 million, and Miami deal about $140 million.

The Indianapolis service area includes Marion County, Clay Township in Hamilton County and Pleasant Township in Johnson County. The St. Louis service area includes the city and county of St. Louis in Missouri plus the counties of Madison and St. Clair in Illinois.

The Atlanta service area includes six counties: Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, Douglas, Fulton and Gwinnett. The Miami area includes Dade and Broward counties.

The MAA program is managed by GSA's Federal Technology Service. The contracts provide for standard voice service as well as switched data service and dedicated transmission service offerings. The scope of the contracts allows for additional services as they become available in the commercial marketplace.

Procurements for eight more cities are under way.
