Leidos' secure cargo solutions
The secure movement of people and commerce is critical to life and the economy. Leidos security products, bolstered by its acquisition of L3Harris’ security business, have been at the forefront of securing cross border movements of people and cargo.
As cross border rail traffic has increased so has the need for enhanced border security. The Leidos solution for railcar inspection uses X-ray imaging and radiation scanning to help security personnel find concealed weapons, nuclear material and other contraband.
The system can process 150 railcars and cargo containers per hour, addressing both the need for efficient border crossings with the requirement to move commerce in a secure manner.
The radiation detection can find the nuclear threats while ignoring harmless naturally occurring radioactive materials.
The system automatically reads each railcar and cargo container’s RFID tag and integrates the data for immediate inspection as well as storing it for future uses.
The company has ongoing research and development efforts at its own facilities as well as on customer sites with a goal of improving imaging and material discrimination.
The company’s equipment scans $180 billion of railcar freight a year.
On the people side of the security equation, the Leidos ProVision offering uses automated imaging technology to identify materials that aren’t spotted by metal detectors, such as ceramic knives and some explosives.
The company has improved the platform to reduce false alarms, which has reduced the need for secondary patdowns by 40 percent and reduced the processing to less than six seconds, allowing 200 to 300 people per hour to pass through.
The ProVision system has conducted more than 1 billion scans worldwide to date.
With the impact of COVID-19, Leidos began offering antimicrobial security trays to minimize the spread of bacteria from person to surface contact. It also has developed a UV-C light sanitation system that can sanitize trays between uses.
