Hughes Network Systems and the power of high throughput satellite services

Natural disasters often test the limits of communications systems for responders and governments at all levels rely on in their response. For Hughes Network Systems that means creating solutions built off of its High Throughput Satellite service using its Jupiter satellites.

The technology is the backup communications for agencies, such as FEMA, for when emergencies disrupt terrestrial network, making rescue and recovery efforts more difficult.

In the last year, the company has leverage its experience to expand capabilities through a series of partnerships.

For example, it is work with CenturyLink to create a managed network services for 1,000 Interior Department sites, including locations for the National Park Service, Fish & Wildlife Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This is part of the department’s $1.6 billion network modernization effort.

With U.S. Postal Service, Hughes is creating a satellite network to give high-speed broadband service 600 USPS sites.

And when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the Army turned to Hughes to equipment Fort Bragg with reliable, high-speed internet access, so returning soldiers could work during quarantine.
