Sotera Defense Solutions -- now part of KeyW -- won the $69 million contact that was competed under the Software and Systems Engineering Services Next Generation program.
Engility has held the "SSES NexGen" contract since at least 2014, according to Deltek.
The company received a contract extension in September worth $5.3 million but that runs out at the end of this month, according to solicitation documents.
The contract covers software technical support such as development, software and systems engineering, acceptance testing, information security management, quality assurance, configuration management and other services.
Because of the protest, another extension may be necessary. In the justification document for the extension, the Army argued that if the contract came to an end without a new one in place it would put warfighters at risk because there would be no satellite communications support.
Engility filed its protest May 15. A decision is due Aug. 23.
