TOP 100: CSRA's journey of transformation

CSRA's creation in itself is a story of the need to transform. But the story continues as the company has pushed forward in the market with a strategy focused on bringing IT modernization solutions to government agencies.

As with many companies in the federal market, CSRA is a story of transformation. But their story has roots that go back several years to a dark time in the company’s history.

Frankly, the business was struggling. In 2012, CSRA was known as Computer Sciences Corp. and it brought in new CEO Mike Lawrie. He quickly launched a turnaround effort that included layoffs, a restructuring to create a leaner organization, and a focus on turning around unprofitable contracts and projects.

That strategy also included divestitures.

The government business was a relative bright spot for CSC but as Lawrie continued to reshape CSC’s portfolio, he made the decision in 2015 that public sector needed to go.

At the same time, SRA International was also going through its own turnaround efforts. Lawrie and company, including Larry Prior, then leader of CSC public sector and now CSRA 'sCEO, negotiated a deal where SRA would merge with CSC public sector to create a new publicly-traded company we now know as CSRA.

At the time, Prior and other executives including SRA CEO Bill Ballhaus talked about how the two companies were coming together after they had gone through their respective turnaround efforts. The worst was behind them. Both were coming off years where revenue contraction had stopped, quite an accomplishment for 2015.

Today, CSRA is at the forefront of efforts to bring commercial technologies into the government market as part of a strategy to offer IT modernization solutions to agencies. The company is ranked No. 9 on the 2017 Washington Technology Top 100 with $3.9 billion in prime contracts.
