DOT floats contract for improved data standards

The Transportation Department is exploring data frameworks and governance for establishing future civil integrated management (CIM) standards.

After several years of research, DOT officials want to identify existing digital transportation lifecycle data standards and then using various findings to develop conceptual data standards, a data governance approach, and an implementation plan, according to a sources sought notice.

The CIM is based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology. BIM has been used in vertical construction for many years but has moved to civil works. The concept integrates full-agency processes. It encompasses areas including eConstruction and asset management, finance, planning, and interconnection and data flow between the various processes.

The contract’s task areas include:

• A kick-off meeting
• Literature review
• Conduct a synthesis that identifies data management, interoperability and governance standards from national and international examples.
• Analyze findings and incorporate input received from Federal Highway Administration
• TechBrief summarizing the goals, methods, and findings of the project
• Webinar of findings
• Publication-ready final report

DOT expects to coordinate with state highway agencies and other agencies.

DOT plans to release a solicitation in mid-June. The initial notice was released May 24.
