30 percent of agencies fail to migrate to HTTPS protocol before deadline

Thirty-one percent of the approximately 1,200 .gov domains failed to migrate to the HTTPS communications protocol by New Year's Eve, as mandated by the Office of Management and Budget in June 2015.

According to FCW, the mandate was made so that agencies would have a more secure connection by establishing an encrypted connection that protects most information exchanged between a website and its user.

The mandate also included a call to prioritize federal domains that involve an exchange of sensitive or personally identifiable information or that receive substantial traffic, FCW reported.

Of all the domains, a GSA spokesperson told FCW that those falling under the executive branch were the best at meeting the deadline.
