Northrop Grumman and Ultra Electronics have partnered to develop and enhance new maritime domain awareness and anti-submarine warfare capabilities for Northrop Grumman’s collection of autonomous systems.

Northrop Grumman’s autonomous systems operate in place of manned vehicles and allow for extended missions and thus a decreased risk of national security and human lives, according to the company’s website.

Extensive maritime surveillance would provide increased naval capabilities that could prevent opposing forces from violating national interests, the company said in a release. It would also free manned aircrafts for other missions and create more affordable naval technology.

Both Northrop Grumman and Ultra Electronics will participate in a series of demonstrations this year to show how these autonomous systems operate over lengths of time in oceans while also gathering maritime intelligence.
