Recent cyber attack causes Obama to propose new regulations

In the wake of an apparent attack on the U.S. Central Command by hackers claiming alliance with ISIS, President Obama has been laying out legislative proposals and executive actions related to cybersecurity, FCW reports.

One such proposal would create a 30-day notification requirement for companies to inform consumers about breaches, FCW said, creating a federal standard that would supersede state laws.

Such a proposal could come with issues, however; Mark McCarthy, vice president of public policy at the Software and Information Industry Association, does not believe these federal regulations will make consumers safer. It would also make the metrics for reporting breaches equal between the private sector and government, FCW reported.
