Navy wants to build big data ecosystem
The Navy wants to kick off a research effort to develop a Naval Big Data Ecosystem that will pull together information from a variety of sources to improve analytics that support the warfighter.
The Navy’s Office of Naval Research plans to build a Naval Big Data Ecosystem to provide more sophisticated analytics for supporting its warfighting applications.
The Office of Naval Research is interested in receiving white papers and full proposals for advanced technology development that will forge major advancements toward a big data ecosystem, according to procurement documents.
The Navy’s intent is to significantly improve the naval community’s real-time ability to bring together data from national systems and sensors and from naval combat and weapons systems and sensors. In the past, the ability to merge these types of information to support tactical warfighting has been extremely limited.
The Navy has used technologies, such as cloud computing, big data and improved cross-domain technologies, to better expand the possibilities for integration and exploitation of national and tactical data sources.
The research office wants to focus on four key areas:
Developing a robust naval data science foundation that addresses data representations and ontologies required to support a wide range of naval warfare mission Areas.
Identifying, ingesting, and indexing data sources pertinent to naval warfighting missions.
Developing advanced analytics for naval warfare mission areas.
Setting up data protection and security mechanisms to ensure the integrity of data used throughout the analytic process.
The Navy released a presolicitation that requests white papers and full proposals June 19. Responses are due by Oct. 3.
