General Dynamics Electric Boat Corp. has won a $29.8 million option to provide the Navy with engineering and technical design services to develop new submarine technologies.

General Dynamics Electric Boat Corp. has won a $29.8 million option to provide the Navy with engineering and technical design services.

These engineering and technical design services will support research and development of advanced submarine technologies for current and future submarine platforms.

Advanced submarine R&D includes studies on manufacturing, maintenance, manning and survivability.  Work also will focus on hull integrity, performance, weight/margin, stability, machinery systems, acoustics, hydrodynamics, ship control and logistics. Human factors, materials, weapons handling and stowage, submarine safety, and affordability are other focuses of the research, the Defense Department said.

Work will be performed in Groton, Conn. The contract runs through October.

Funding in the amount of $625,000 is obligated at the time of the award, and will not expire at the end of fiscal 2014.
