Who are the best CFOs in the D.C. area?

Last night, at the Northern Virginia Technology Council’s Great Washington Technology CFO Awards, the crowd was gathered in full force to support some of the most influential chief financial officers in the Washington area.

Of course, among the many strong nominees, only a few walk away with the awards. Here are the results of last night’s award ceremony:

Financer of the Year
Tige Savage, Revolution Ventures

Savage co-founded Revolution Ventures with Steve Case in 2005. The firm invests in and helps build innovative companies. Before Revolution Ventures, Savage was vice president of Time Warner Ventures, where he led a team focused on investments in technology and next-generation media companies for AOL, HBO, Time Inc., Time Warner Cable, Turner and Warner Bros. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from James Madison University, and a MBA from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.

Emerging Growth CFO of the Year
Tony Abate, Echo360

Abate brings more than 20 years of experience in the technology, digital media and converged services fields to Echo360, which aims to help institutions leverage technology for the good of both teachers and students, both inside and outside of the classroom. Abate has served in a number of product management, senior executive, investment and advisory roles. He began his career in the U.S. Air Force. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Duke University and a MBA from Harvard Business School.

Private Company CFO of the Year
Mike Corkery, Deltek

Corkery was Deltek’s CFO when he joined the company in January 2010. He became acting Deltek CEO in December 2012, and is now the company’s CEO. Before Deltek, Corkery was CFO and acting CEO for ICO Global Communications, and before that, he held various senior financial and operational executive positions for a number of technology companies. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Bonaventure University.

Public Company CFO of the Year
Don Clarke, Eloqua

Clarke has been CFO of Eloqua since 2008, and has brought the company’s revenue from $21 million in 2007 to more than $125 million in 2013. He and the company’s CEO led the company’s first successful offering, and the company was later acquired in December 2012 by Oracle. Before Eloqua, Clarke was CFO at Cloakware, and also served as CFO of Visual Networks. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Virginia Tech.

Michael G. Devine Hall of Fame Award
John Burton, general partner, Updata Partners

Burton is co-founder and general partner of Updata Partners. He began his career in information technology three decades ago. From 1989 to 1995, Burton served as president, COO and CEO of Legent Corporation, during which time the company grew from $126 million to more than $500 million in revenue. Before Legent, he co-founded Business Software Technology, a VC-backed firm that was acquired by Legent. He graduated with honors from Boston College.
