ITT Exelis to deliver advanced weather imager to South Korea

ITT Exelis has won a multimillion dollar contract with South Korea to provide the country with an advanced geostationary weather imager to support the country’s forecasting capabilities.

This contract is related to the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A program, under which Exelis will deliver an advanced metrological imager, to be launched into geostationary orbit in 2017, the company said.

The imager will “provide South Korea more data more regularly and at higher resolution resulting in better advanced warning, which is critical for saving lives and property,” said Rob Mitrevski, an Exelis Geospatial Systems vice president.

This advanced metrological imager provides several spectral bands and two times the resolution capability of South Korea’s existing satellites to about one-half mile, ITT Exelis said in a release.

The company deals in this kind of work often, currently building advanced baseline imager systems for NOAA, NASA and Japan. The company said that it has provided every geostationary imager and sounder to the U.S. government since 1994, as well as the current imagers flown by Japan and South Korea.

Also, just a few months ago, the company won a contract to study design modification and concepts for a weather imagine sensor for the U.S. Air Force.
