CA Technologies sells off security business unit

CA Technologies Inc. has sold its Internet security business unit, which is now Total Defense Inc., the new stand-alone company announced June 20.

Financial terms were not announced.

CA closed a deal June 14 with Updata Partners, a venture capital firm, which then formed Total Defense as a provider of anti-malware and antivirus software to detect threats to IT systems.

Paul Lipman, the new company’s CEO, most recently was chief strategy officer at Webroot, an endpoint security provider.

Christopher Hickey, formerly head of CA’s Channel Sales division, is the field president, and Lawrence Guerin is the vice president of marketing. The new CFO is Marcus Smith, who was CFO at Nominum, an Internet infrastructure software provider.

Total Defense, CA's former business, has a track record of more than 15 years of experience and a network of more than 10,000 partners, according to the announcement.

“Consumers and businesses are becoming more reliant on their online information, applications and access points in the face of a growing tidal wave of digital threats and online crime,” Lipman said in a statement.

CA has been going to more changes. In April, the global Fortune 500 provider of IT management software and solutions extended its reach into the public sector with the announced purchase of Base Technologies, a private consulting firm focused on the management of government IT assets.
