SAIC taps former Lockheed exec as new chairman

A. Thomas Young has been elected non-executive chairman of the board of directors of Science Applications International Corp., effective June 18. Young succeeds Ken Dahlberg, who retired from the board the same day after the company’s annual stockholders meeting.

Young has been a member of the SAIC board since 1995 and most recently served as its independent lead director, the company stated in an announcement dated June 21.

He will continue to serve as a member of the company's nominating and corporate governance and finance committees.

Young retired from Lockheed Martin Corp. as an executive vice president in 1995. Before the merger with Lockheed Corp., Young served as the president and chief operating officer of Martin Marietta from 1990 to 1995.

“As a board member for the past 15 years, Tom Young has provided invaluable guidance and advice to the company,” said Walt Havenstein, SAIC CEO and board member, in the announcement. “With his knowledge of our business and leadership experience, he will help guide us through our next phase of growth.”

SAIC, of McLean, Va., ranks No. 5 on Washington Technology’s 2010 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
