7 hot IT projects for 2011

Market research firm FedSources analyzed President Barack Obama’s 2011 budget request and identified these seven projects as new initiatives proposed for funding next year. In other words, these are projects that are not following existing contracts, but represent completely new business opportunities. The dollar figures listed below represent the funding request for the projects in fiscal 2011, not the total value of the projects.

Agency: Defense Department Tricare Management Activity
Project: Electronic Health Record Way Ahead. This program will create an electronic health record that can be accessed anytime and anywhere for the lifetime of the patient.
Proposed 2011 funding: $302.3 million.

Agency: Agriculture Department 
Project: Optimized Computing Environment. USDA wants to move from a decentralized to a centralized computing IT architecture. The move is supposed to increase security of financial data and personally identifiable information. It also is part of the agency’s effort to help protect the larger federal community from cybersecurity attacks.
Proposed 2011 funding: $83 million.

Agency: Transportation Department
Project: DOT Cybersecurity and Privacy. The initiative will focus on cybersecurity and privacy efforts at the department.
Proposed 2011 funding: $54 million.

Agency: Health and Human Services Department, Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services
Project: Data Improvement Initiative. The goal is to move CMS’ data environment from a focus on claims processing to a focus on data analysis and information sharing.
Proposed 2011 funding: $50.3 million.

Agency: Defense Human Resources Activity and Tricare Management Activity
Project: Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record. This project is related to the Electronic Health Record Way Ahead, with the goal of creating an electronic health record that can be accessed anytime and anywhere for the lifetime of the patient.
Proposed 2011 funding: $40 million.

Agency: U.S. Marine Corps
Project: Operational Support Systems – Command and Control. The initiative is to ensure that commanders are receiving and are able to share information from a variety of systems to give commanders a common operational picture.
Proposed 2011 funding: $30.4 million.

Agency: Justice Department, Bureau of Prisons
Project: Bureau of Prisons Network Continuity of Operations. Known as BOPnet, this is the Bureau of Prisons IT infrastructure, which serves federal prisons and other correctional facilities around the nation.
Proposed 2011 funding: $15.1 million.
