Serco gets green light to manage Atlanta traffic systems

Serco Inc. will provide a variety of management and advisory services to the Georgia Department of Transportation under a five-year contract that could be worth as much as $50 million.

The provider of professional, technology and management services will assist the GDOT with comprehensive management, installation and maintenance services and also maintain more than 2,500 intelligent transportation devices in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The intelligent transportation system provides motorist assistance and travelers’ information, and also enhances safety, eases traffic congestion and helps reduces carbon emissions, according to a Serco announcement.

Under the contract, the company will manage the camera systems, video and presence detection apparatus, ramp metering systems, message signs and structures, and also oversee the maintenance of buildings that house the system’s backbone devices.

In addition to this new work, Serco also manages the privatization effort for the Georgia 511 motorists’ assistance system and provides program management, technology and staffing support to GDOT’s NaviGAtor Traffic Management Center.
