CSC builds cloud for Los Angeles city workers

The City of Angels is elevating its municipal employees into the clouds.

Computer Sciences Corp. has began work on a five-year, $7.25 million contract to replace Los Angeles’ current e-mail and other applications with Google’s Web-based productivity tools.

Under the terms of the agreement, CSC, in conjunction with Google, will provide systems integration and end-user services, including solution architecture and design for the city’s more than 30,000 employees.

The award also covers integration with the city’s identity management system, migration of live and archive e-mail data, set-up, and training for city trainers and administrators, according to a CSC announcement dated Dec. 14.

CSC also will provide ongoing account and service-level management as a Google Apps authorized reseller.

“By incorporating CSC’s cloud computing integration and security expertise with Google’s innovative cloud applications, the city of Los Angeles will dramatically lower operational costs while significantly improving the end-user experience and productivity,” said Randi Levin, chief technology officer and general manager of the Los Angeles Information and Technology Agency, in the statement.

CSC also will offer immediate standardized pricing for Google Apps and CSC Cloud Orchestration Services to all public agencies in California, enabling public-sector agencies to realize similar benefits in innovation, productivity and cost.

The contract has a three-year base period and two one-year renewal options.
