SRA International wins a $20 million contract to provide the Federal Aviation Administration with air traffic control technology for small and midsize airports.

SRA International Inc. has won a $20 million contract to provide the Federal Aviation Administration with technology designed to aid air traffic control at some of the nation’s smaller airports.

The five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract has a ceiling value of more than $20 million.

Under the award, SRA International will provide a low-cost ground surveillance (LCGS) solution for small- to medium-size airports in the National Airspace System.

One of the FAA's top priorities is to reduce the risk of runway incursions in the system while maximizing operational efficiency and ensuring airport capacity.

The LCGS program is one of several initiatives aimed at reducing the number and severity of incidents at almost 500 U.S. towered airports where current airport surface detection equipment is too expensive to deploy.

LCGS provides an added layer of safety by giving air traffic controllers basic ground surveillance for aircraft and vehicles operating on runways and taxiways, SRA International officials said. The system also would provide a foundational platform for future runway safety applications and systems.

SRA’s LCGS solution is scalable and adaptable to accommodate varying airport sizes and runway configurations in a range of visibility and weather conditions, the officials said.

The SRA solution is derived from a mature commercial off-the-shelf advanced surface movement guidance and control system that is currently operational at large international airports, such as Frankfurt and Munich, SRA President and Chief Executive Stan Sloane said April 21 in a news release.

SRA International, of Faifax, Va., ranks No. 32 on Washington Technology’s 2008 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
