Lockheed gets weather-satellite deal

Lockheed Martin Corp. has won a civilian weather-satellite contract from NASA worth $1.09 billion, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Known as GOES-R, it is expected to be the last big federal satellite-contract award until the incoming Obama administration reassesses how big-ticket civilian and national-security satellites will be planned and funded.

The contract is for two satellites, with options on two more. Lockheed Martin was pitted against Boeing Co. and Northrop Grumman Corp. in the competition for the job.
