McAfee wraps up Secure Computing buy

McAfee Inc. has completed its acquisition of Secure Computing Corp. in a deal valued at approximately $462 million.

Secure Computing, of San Jose, Calif., provides technology solutions that help customers protect their critical Web, e-mail and network assets.

McAfee officials said they plan to use Secure Computing's TrustedSource technology to expand intelligent "in-the-cloud" security services for an added layer of defense. That will add to network protection both on premises and through cloud-hosted services, they said.

Security in the cloud is an approach that offers customers an opportunity to receive a fully designed, built and deployed suite of security services that can be subscribed to on demand.

The acquisition also strengthens McAfee's federal government presence worldwide and its security risk management offerings with solutions and expertise in gateway appliances and next-generation technologies. Government clients will receive centralized, policy-driven security management, for protection at the endpoint and over the network, the officials said.

With the acquisition and Secure Computing's more than 22,000 customers in 106 countries, McAfee expects to become one of the largest network security players, officials added.
