Lockheed extends work on Global Transportation Network

Lockheed Martin Corp. will continue supporting a global transportation system that processes millions of transactions daily for the U.S. Transportation Command under a $41 million contract extension.

Under the extension, Lockheed Martin's Savi unit will provide the services necessary to operate and maintain the Global Transportation Network (GTN) command and control system, company officials said. In the course of its work, the company will identify and resolve operational challenges, analyze user requirements and support global user operations.

The latest extension raises the total value of the GTN contract to $475 million since it was awarded to the company in 1995, company officials said.

The network is a Web-based automated information system that supports a wide base of users throughout the military and commercial sectors with near real-time information and management capabilities, according to a company news release. As such, it allows them to access and employ transportation and deployment information about the location and scheduling of material, deployed forces and support personnel. The system averages 4.5 million transactions each day.

"GTN is like a FedEx or UPS tracking system for the military, but it's even more sophisticated because it fuses data from 30 different DOD systems and 240 commercial carriers in the land, air, and ocean transportation modes," said Angie Heise, director of Lockheed Martin's Savi Logistics System.

Lockheed Martin, of Bethesda, Md., ranks No. 1 on Washington Technology's 2008 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
