L-3 to upgrade turret systems for Air Force

L-3 Communications Corp. will assist the Air Force in reconfiguring aircraft turrets to accept high-definition TV sensors, fiber optics and other technology under a contract that has a maximum value of $34 million.

The indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract requires L-3 to furnish the Air Force Research Laboratory's Directed Energy Directorate with qualified technicians, materials, facilities and supplies for the airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance imaging turrets.

In addition, L-3 will propose upgrades to the turrets with high-definition TV sensors, improved mid-wavelength infrared sensors, fiber optics or other high bandwidth slip-ring capabilities, larger or more versatile apertures and laser technology additions to the sensor systems.

The turrets will be compatible with Persistent Threat Detection System and Airborne Reconnaissance Low airborne turret systems and meet specific Air Force technical requirements.

The Directed Energy Contracts Division of the Directorate of Contracting, at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., is the contracting authority.
