All systems are go for General Dynamics Corp.'s work on submarine systems modernization for the Navy.

The company's Advanced Information Systems division won a $66.2 million contract extension to continue work on the Submarine Tactical Control System portion of the Navy's modernization program for submarine combat systems, General Dynamics said.

The company will develop commercial software and hardware upgrades for tactical submarines and weapons controls for several classes of subs, the company said. The project is using an open-architecture and open-business-model approach so the Navy will have greater interoperability, portability, scalability and supplier independence.

Work under this contract modification will be performed in Fairfax, Va., and is expected to be completed by December 2009. This extension brings the total value of the modernization work to $129.5 million. General Dynamics first won the work in 2002.

General Dynamics ranks No. 7 on Washington Technology's 2007 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
