General Dynamics gets Navy telecom work

Several Navy facilities will undergo major telecommunications upgrades under a $10 million task order awarded to General Dynamics.
The company's General Dynamics Information Technology business unit received the award to modernize the telephone switch systems for Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla.; Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Ga.; and Naval Station Mayport, Fla.
The Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command made the award.
General Dynamics will upgrade the existing switch systems with new software and replace elements within the voice network that don't support the software. Voice-over-IP will be installed for 5,000 users in the Jacksonville area.
The upgrade is designed to give the Navy increased functionality while minimizing risk to its ongoing mission.
The task order was awarded under the Network-Centric Solutions contract. General Dynamics has completed more than 500 switch and software upgrades and replacements at nearly 400 locations for switching systems that support more than 1.5 million voice lines, company officials said.
General Dynamics, based in Falls Church, Va., ranks No. 7 on Washington Technology's 2007 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
