In search of a tee shot

Find opportunities — and win them.

I play golf about three times a year. Once with some college friends on homecoming weekend at our alma mater. Another time with some friends at a charity event for our hometown hospital in Luray, Va.

And the third time is the Washington Technology Top 100 Golf Tournament.

I've come to learn that the driving range is a great liar. I went on Sunday to get in some practice. And I hit a bucket of balls yesterday morning to loosen up before the tournament at Westfields in Fairfax, Va.

I don't have great distance, but the shots were in the air and straight. I was consistent, so I was feeling good.

All that ended when on the first tee, I hit the ball into the tall grass by the tee box. It was just the first of many I would lose that day.

The day did serve as a reminder for me about the pleasure of golf; it can help you forget what is going on at the office or elsewhere as you just concentrate on the game.

The weather was amazing too. The humidity disappeared. The sky was blue. The shadows crisp.

Overall, a good day.
