Harris deploys Ky. public safety network

Harris Stratex Networks has helped Kentucky test and launch an improved statewide public safety network to support emergency services.

The installation of the high-capacity, digital wireless network capable of providing voice, video and data services for public safety communications completes the initial segment of an ongoing three-year project with a potential value of $42 million.

The overhaul of the existing Kentucky Emergency Warning System involves the design and construction of an IP-based network based on the company's Truepoint digital microwave radio system.

As the project's systems integrator, Harris Stratex Networks is responsible for site planning and installation of all network facilities and the equipment and technologies involved.

The digital network is intended to provide interoperable public safety communications over a secure system for law enforcement, firefighters and other emergency service organizations throughout the Bluegrass State.

"The [state] is a perfect example of how a high-bandwidth microwave backbone can easily connect geographically dispersed agencies and infrastructure," said Jayne Leighton, vice president of North American Sales and Services with Harris Stratex Networks.

"The solution greatly benefits the Kentucky agencies most critical to public safety and security and offers a wide range of benefits to other state organizations and programs," she added.
