Alion wins Navy aircraft carrier option

Alion Science and Technology Corp. won a one-year, $11 million contract option to continue work on the Navy's CVN-77 aircraft carrier.

The McLean, Va., company is providing business and finance, engineering, logistics, integrated warfare systems and program management support for the carrier's new construction, refueling and complex overhaul activities.

The CVN-77 is the 10th and last Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. As such, it includes design improvements that will pave the way to a new class of carriers known as CVN-21.

The Navy's Program Executive Office for Aircraft Carriers funded the second option, which runs from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2007. The initial support contract, worth $125 million, was awarded in October 2003.The work is being performed at the Washington Navy Yard.

Alion has 14 subcontractors working for it on the contract.

Alion, which has 3,700 employees, ranks No. 57 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list of the largest federal IT contractors. The 2007 Top 100 list is due out May 14.
