Alion to upgrade submarine combat systems

Alion Science and Technology Corp. will help the Navy modernize submarine combat systems through a contract award worth up to $25 million over five years.

Alion of McLean, Va., will provide engineering services to help modernize the submarine electronic combat systems. The systems are used to for threat detection and tracking, communications, navigation and weapon launch capabilities.

The Program Executive Office for Submarines, Submarine Combat System Program Office within the Naval Sea Systems Command awarded the contract to Alion.

Alion will perform system engineering trade-off studies to define system performance specifications and determine interface and software requirements. The company also will evaluate and select suitable hardware, develop or modify computer software, perform software integration and conduct system certification testing.

Alion will also assist with shore-based testing with simulated data gathered from sea tests as well as system validation demonstrations.

Future task orders may include engineering projects in a range of technology areas, including sonar, radar, combat control, navigation and communications. The engineering and system development work will be performed at Alion's Engineering Technology Center in Mystic, Conn.

Alion ranks No. 57 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list of the largest federal IT contractors.
