Serco gets Navy anti-terrorism tech deal

Serco Inc. has been selected by the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center to provide engineering and technical services for integrated surveillance and intelligence systems that protect ships and infrastructure at Navy ports through a five-year, $63.9 million contract.

Under the contract, Serco of Vienna, Va., will support SPAWAR in evaluating, integrating and installing domain awareness and anti-terrorism and force protection systems at ports that have Naval, Coast Guard and critical commercial operations.

The Navy Special Projects and Surveillance Systems Branch awarded the contract. Serco has held under a similar contract with SPAWAR since 1997.

The systems, already deployed at several U.S. ports by Serco, include sensors, surveillance systems and other technology, along with collaboration software that allows the information to be shared rapidly across several agencies.

Serco will support ship and shore sites of the Navy, Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command and other government agencies worldwide. Much of the work will be focused on implementing and sustaining maritime domain awareness, anti-terrorism and force protection systems, as well as supporting demonstrations of how the systems could be deployed in other joint operational environments.

Serco ranks No. 52 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list of the largest federal IT contractors.
