Federal Signal Corp. has acquired Codespear LLC, a provider of emergency management software, for about $17 million.

The acquisition will furnish Federal Signal of Oak Brook, Ill., with a technology platform that will raise functionality, intelligence and interoperability of its core solutions, said Robert Welding, Federal Signal's president and CEO.

"Codespear's robust real time communications solutions, software development talent, and proven IP-based platform will boost Federal Signal's ability to meet our customers' increasing demands for integrated security solutions," he said.

Following the acquisition, Codespear of Birmingham, Mich., will become part of Federal Signal's Safety Products Group, which has been renamed Federal Signal Safety and Security Systems Group.

Codespear's software enables communications for employees, citizens and first responders using any communications device, according to Federal Signal.

Federal Signal designs and manufactures a suite of products for municipal, governmental, industrial and airport customers.
