SI International hauls in Navy logistics system deal

SI International Inc. won a contract to support a Defense Department logistics system that supports a wide host of databases and data services world-wide integral to supporting American war fighters.

The Standard Automated Logistics Tool Set, or Salts, contract from the Navy Inventory Control Point, Mechanicsburg, Pa., is worth about $3.6 million over two years.

Under the contract, SI International of Reston, Va., will provide computer operations, network engineering, information handling and exchange, information assurance, training and IT initiatives.

Salts is an electronic data interchange program that delivers capabilities to broker logistics data and services from anywhere in the world. The Defense Department has 995 Salts customers, which range from the military services' ships and shore commands to U.S. embassies and the Defense Logistics Agency.

The Salts project furnishes the DOD with a means of moving logistical and administrative data from a single point of entry to a wide host of databases and data services world-wide. It began as a Naval Supply Systems Command during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 from which it has evolved into a broad logistics support network.

SI International ranks No. 40 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list of the largest federal IT contractors.
