General Dynamics wins pair of AF communications deals

General Dynamics IT won two contracts totaling $26 million to supply integrated, high-bandwidth communications at two Air Force bases in California.

For the projects, the company will design and install more than 1.1 million feet of fiber-optic cabling and basewide Ethernet over synchronous, optical network solutions. It also will provide operations and maintenance training.

General Dynamics IT will furnish IT solutions to process classified and unclassified voice, data, video, images and sensor requirements for the 940th Air Refueling Wing at Beale Air Force Base and the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base.

The company also will design and install a metropolitan area network at Beale to support base users in about 143 buildings. It will render similar support to users in 518 facilities at Edwards.

The projects were awarded under the Netcents Combat Information Transport Site Survey, Engineering Integration and Installation contract.

General Dynamics IT was formed when General Dynamics Network Systems combined with Anteon International Inc. in June. The unit's 16,000 employees deliver IT, systems engineering and professional services to the defense, intelligence, homeland security, federal civilian agencies and the commercial sector.

General Dynamics of Falls Church, Va., has about 81,900 employees and had annual revenue of $21.2 billion in 2005. The company ranks No. 4 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list of the largest federal IT contractors.
