General Dynamics secures Army base network deal

General Dynamics Information Technology will modernize the communications and data network infrastructure at Fort Carson, Colo., under a two-year, $32 million contract from the Army.

General Dynamics will upgrade the data and voice network infrastructure by installing the latest Internet protocol telephony technology, as well as a gigabit Ethernet data network.

Fort Carson is slated to receive more than 9,500 soldiers under the Army's Transformation Plan. The upgraded communications network will support the installation's mission activity.

The contract was awarded under the Army's Digital Switched Systems Modernization Program. This is part of the Installation Information Infrastructure Program, the Army's multiyear initiative to upgrade its installations worldwide and provide greater bandwidth to address increasing demands for voice, video and data services.

General Dynamics Information Technology, formerly General Dynamics Network Systems, is a unit of General Dynamics of Falls Church, Va.

General Dynamics, which has about 72,700 employees and annual sales of $21.2 billion, ranks No. 4 on Washington Technology's 2006 Top 100 list of the largest federal IT contractors.
