Calif. county taps Motorola for public safety communications

Motorola Inc. won an $8 million contract to deploy a public safety information system for the sheriff's department in Fresno County, Calif.

Under the contract, Motorola of Schaumburg, Ill., will build, install and implement a public safety system that will enable computer-aided dispatching across more than 40 state, local and federal agencies that operate in the county.

Motorola's system furnishes computer-aided dispatching, in-vehicle computer systems and records management. It also will integrate with a local correctional records management system that tracks about 3,000 inmates. The system also allows for expansion into adjoining counties' systems to enhance interoperability in the area.

Motorola has more than 68,000 employees and had sales of $36.8 billion in fiscal 2005. The company ranks No. 20 on Washington Technology's 2005 Top 100 list of federal prime contractors.
