Army taps General Dynamics for network infrastructure

General Dynamics Corp. won a two-year, $15.6 million task order contract from the Army to modernize the communications and data network infrastructure at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Under the task order, General Dynamics' network systems business unit will install the latest Protocol telephony technology and a gigabit Ethernet data network.

The Army recently selected Fort Bliss as the site for its Evaluation Brigade Combat Team, where future combat systems will be evaluated. The upgraded communications network will support this activity.

The task order was issued under the Army's Digital Switched Systems Modernization Program as part of the Installation Information Infrastructure Program. It is the Army's initiative to upgrade all its installations worldwide by providing greater bandwidth to meet increasing demands for voice, video and data services.

General Dynamics has performed similar infrastructure work in Germany, Iraq and Kuwait and has upgraded voice switches and installed data networks throughout Korea.

General Dynamics of Falls Church, Va., has about 70,900 employees and had 2004 revenue of $19.2 billion. The company ranks No. 5 on Washington Technology's 2005 Top 100 list of federal prime contractors.
