L-3 wins TSA explosives detection order

L-3 Communications Corp. has won a $33 million contract from the Transportation Security Administration to provide additional explosives detection systems.

L-3 Communications Corp. has won a $33 million contract from the Transportation Security Administration to provide additional explosives detection systems, the company announced today.

Under the contract, L-3 Communications Security and Detection Systems will provide TSA with its eXaminer 3DX explosives detection systems. The company did not disclose how many additional systems would be deployed through the latest order.

The eXaminer, one of only two inline systems certified by TSA to screen checked baggage, can screen 600 bags per hour when part of a fully integrated baggage-handling system. The company has deployed more than 500 of its explosives detection systems throughout the world.

L-3 Communications Security and Detection Systems has contracts with several federal agencies, including Customs Service, Marshals Service and the Agriculture and State departments.

L-3 Communications Security and Detection Systems is a unit of L-3 of New York. The company, which has 44,200 employees and annual sales of $6.8 billion, ranks No. 14 on Washington Technology's 2004 Top 100 list, which measures federal contracting revenue.
