Harris lands new FAA weather and radar work

Harris Corp. has won a 54-month, $57 million, follow-on contract from the Federal Aviation Administration for additional support for the Weather and Radar Processor program, the company announced this week.

Under the contract, Harris of Melbourne, Fla., will continue providing FAA with hardware and software support throughout the life of the program. The follow-on work brings the total project value to $188 million, the company said.

The nation's Air Route Traffic Control Centers have been using the Weather and Radar Processor since it became fully operational in 2002 to enable controllers to view real-time, graphical weather data at their positions.

The Weather and Radar Processor is part of FAA's ongoing efforts to modernize and improve its systems. The processor offers the software tools necessary to consolidate weather data from several sources into a single, integrated display to support air traffic operations.

Harris was tasked in 1996 with the initial contract to build the Weather and Radar Processor systems at the nation's 21 Air Route Traffic Control Centers, the Air Traffic Control System Command Center and the William J. Hughes Technical Center.

Harris has more than 12,000 employees and annual sales of $2.5 billion. The company ranked No. 16 on Washington Technology 2004 Top 100 list, which measures federal contracting revenue.
