Spawar support work goes to CSSI

CSSI Inc. won a five-year, $28 million contract from the Navy's Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center to provide technical support for air traffic control and meteorology and oceanographic electronic systems and equipment, the company said today.

The contract is valued at $5.4 million and is for one year with four one-year options. CSSI of Washington will offer Web portal development, network engineering and management operations, systems engineering, computer application training, data integration and help desk support services.

The services are part of the Air Traffic Control National Airspace System modernization program, said John Markey, CSSI's director of information management, who oversees the company's Navy work.

The company will perform most of the work at its Charleston, S.C., office with additional work at the Patuxent Naval Air Station in Maryland, the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Detachment in Norfolk, Va., the Naval Reserve operations center in New Orleans, and McMurdo Station in Antarctica.

McMurdo Station is the largest community in Antarctica, where researchers study biological, Earth and atmospheric sciences. Here, CSSI provides electronic communications and surveillance systems maintenance support for the Navy communications network used to contact the Spawar Systems Center in Charleston, Markey said. The subcontractors on the new contract are Arinc Corp. of Annapolis, Md., and Tape Inc. of McLean, Va., he said.

In previous work for Spawar, CSSI consolidated about 800 Navy Reserve Web sites into a single portal that provides a one-stop shop for job postings, employment benefits and upcoming events for personnel, Markey said. The work was completed at the Spawar Systems Center in Charleston and the Naval Reserve operations center in New Orleans. Under a separate contract, the company also provided network, desktop, system administration and data integration support for Spawar in Charleston, he said.

CSSI is a privately owned engineering and technical services company that specializes in systems analysis and engineering, airspace initiatives and information and program management. Besides the Navy, its clients include the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA and the U.S. and international aviation industries. The company employs more than 200 workers and had 2004 revenue of $23 million, Markey said.
