The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services seeks information from database vendors on the GSA schedule about the capabilities of their platforms to handle extraordinarily large volumes of data. CMS, an agency of the Health and Human Services Department, plans to modernize its enterprise data warehouse.
CMS processes and retains the largest volume of health care data files in the world and disseminates 40 billion records annually, more data than any other federal agency or private company, the agency said in its request for information on FedBizOpps this week. The data consumes a large percentage of the CMS data center's resources and poses a unique requirement for the database vendor.
The agency anticipates building databases containing about 180 terabytes of data over the next five years. At the same time, health care data requires stringent privacy and security coverage.
CMS will provide a technical assistance meeting for interested vendors on Jan. 12. Responses to the RFI are due Jan. 18.
