Ciber navigates Louisiana port security deal

Ciber Inc. has won a four-year, $4.2 million contract from the Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District in Louisiana to provide a harbor management security system designed to increase overall port security and improve port management, the company announced today.

Ciber of Denver will provide an integrated harbor management security system that includes sensors, software, a wireless network, external systems interfaces and business process re-engineering through an integrated portal.

The harbor management security system will enable federal, state and local agencies to share key information related to port activities in a secure environment.

The company has built into the system information on real-time vessel locations, notice of arrivals, real-time tides and currents, low light and infrared smart-video data, ship and services scheduling, billing, pilot scheduling and security management.

Ciber will integrate four layers of protection and automatic threat detection across port facilities, waterways and vessels. This will be done via cameras, radar and automatic identification systems, smart cards and portable sonar units.

Port Charles is the 16th largest port in the nation. It encompasses 203 square miles and handles 55 million tons of cargo annually.

Ciber, a systems integrator for both the government and commercial sectors, has more than 7,500 employees and annual sales of $850 million.
