Intermec nabs Army automatic ID deal

Intermec Technologies Corp. has won a five-year, $238 million contract from the Army for mobile computing and automatic identification systems, the company announced Wednesday.

Intermec of Everett, Wash., will provide advanced mobile computing, automatic identification systems and wireless network technologies and services.

The contract includes a range of mobile computers; portable data collection terminals; barcode scanners, imagers and printers; wired and wireless communications systems and security software; and barcode labels and technical engineering services. It also covers maintenance, training, system and device management solutions as well as responsibility for implementation, warranty and technical assistance.

Los Angeles-based Northrop Grumman Corp. will provide implementation services on the project, the company said.

The contract, known as AIT III, is part of the Defense Department's Automatic Identification Technology initiative, set up to help track assets moving through the department's supply chain.

Intermec Technologies is a subsidiary of Unova Inc. of Everett, a provider of global supply chain management solutions and wired and wireless automated data collection, radio frequency identification and mobile computing systems. Unova has more than 4,800 employees and annual sales of $1.1 billion, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
