Software simplifies data backup for agency

The Transportation Department's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has put in place software from Legato, a division of EMC Corp., Mountain View, Calif., to consolidate and protect data from 90 remote offices and its Washington, D.C., headquarters at one central location.

The federal motor carrier agency is responsible for establishing critical safety programs, such as hazardous-material handling, licensing, border protection, and inspections for trucks and buses. Its remote offices had limited IT staffing and insufficient backup infrastructure.

Legato's RepliStor and NetWorker simplify the data protection and recovery process with branch office data consolidation instead of deploying low-end data backup at each remote office, the company said earlier this week.

RepliStor brings data from branch offices into central data centers located at DOT headquarters for real-time replication. There, long-term and point-in-time backup is handled by Legato's NetWorker and two ADIC Scalar 100 tape libraries. NetWorker's tape management features also maintain off-site copies of all critical data.

As a result of the branch office data consolidation deployment, the agency's central office takes responsibility for the organization's disaster recovery program.
