Stenbit joins SI board

John P. Stenbit, a former assistant secretary of defense, has been appointed to the board of directors at SI International Inc., the company said today. The company's shareholders will vote on his appointment to the position at their meeting in June.

Stenbit's appointment brings the board's total to eight members, six of whom are non-employee directors. The Reston, Va.-based company provides information technology and network solutions primarily to the federal government.

For the past four years, Stenbit was assistant secretary of defense for command, control, communications and intelligence and chief information officer for the Defense Department. He concentrated on information-centric warfare and created an information system to support intelligence and operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Stenbit also started the Counter-Intelligence Field Activity enabling the Defense Department to share information with other agencies to track down terrorists here and abroad, SI International said. He also developed a new information assurance architecture for an Internet system to enhance net-centric warfare. In addition, Stenbit represented the United States at NATO on issues related to communications and information assurance.

Before the Defense Department, Stenbit held various positions at TRW Inc., a defense company acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2002. During his tenure as vice president of TRW, he successfully secured investments for implementing a breakthrough technology in broadband wireless communication, SI International said.

Stenbit holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from the California Institute of technology. He is a former Fulbright fellow and recipient of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service.
